Sick of life. There’s nothing redeeming about existence in the minds of Sunken. They play beautiful atmospheric black metal - some may even use that “post-black” label - but the cold essence of misanthropy that is so defining for the black metal core is completely intact here. Sunken give us introspective, haunting hopelessness, smothered in soundscapes and existential emptiness. There are plenty of life-assuring, upbeat performances at Metal Magic; this probably won’t be one of those. But take it in, and it will likely be a cathartic experience of transcendence.
